Self-defense classes, a temporary hotline and a shared project with Jewish and Arab women.
Arous Elbahar (Bride of the Sea), Association for Women in Jaffa, is a non-profit women's organization founded by a group of Arab women residents of Jaffa, to address the unique social, political and financial challenges they face.
The association encourages and prepares women to start their own businesses. To this end, Bride of the Sea organizes financial workshops for young girls. It also provides disadvantaged groups with access to technology through computer classes and an application development course.
The clashes of May 2021 shocked the delicate bonds of the Jewish-Arab community and led to an increased level of anxiety among neighbors in Jaffa. Given the urgent needs of the women of Jaffa, the Arous Elbahar team wished to implement 3 activities, with the support of the Mediterranean Women's Fund (MedWF):
Prevention: two groups of self-defense classes, which will help women prevent physical, emotional and sexual violence through empowerment.
Case-by-case support: Operation of a temporary 24/7 hotline to assist Jaffa women during this difficult time.
Rebuilding Jewish-Arab trust and community life: a shared project of Jewish and Arab women.
