Fawzia Baba Aïssa

Born in 1960 at Algiers (Algeria). Doctor of Genetics and Neurophysiology.

She has been actively engaged in women’s rights movement in Algeria until 1993, where she was a member of several associations: the women students and workers collective at Algiers University (1978-1982), the students coordination at Algiers University, the « Women’s Film Club » in Algiers (1980-1982). Since then she has been an organizational member of the Association for the emancipation of women (1988-1993) and member of the National Women’s Coordination (1990-1993).

In 1993, she completed a second PhD in Belgium and since 1999 has been appointed as university lecturer at the University of Bourgogne.

She has continued to be heavily engaged in associations concerned with the women’s movement at an international level, in founding the international association “New Ways – an international alliance for social innovation” and the Algerian association “20 ans Barakat” of which she is a member of the board.

Since 2003, she has been active at a regional level as a founding member of the Algerian association “20 ans Barakat” and, between 2004-2007, at a local level in the association «Ni pute ni soumise» in Dijon. She has also coordinated in Dijon the visit of “the caravan trail from the south” which unites women coming from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, France and Spain, and she has coordinated the organization of the training program Young Women Leaders in Algeria which took place in 2007-2008 at Algiers
