Association Tunisienne des Femmes Démocrates

The requested the MedWF’s support for their operating costs, which are focused on: 
- legal assistance for women victims of violence (lawyers' fees, court tax stamps, bailiffs' fees, notarial deeds, etc.); 
- judiciary assistance for women victims of violence at the four centers run by ATFD (because the law supposed to protect them is not applied, and because women in precarious situations do not have access to legal aid), enabling them to be guided, counseled and represented in court; 
- operating costs for the four listening centers (means of subsistence for the premises housing the centers: rent, electricity, telephone, office supplies, cleaning, etc.); 
- social assistance for women victims of violence (emergency hotel accommodation, purchase of medicines, food and hygiene products, transport costs for everything relating to obtaining the defense of victims' rights).

ATFD has requested support from the Fund to help women living in precarity defend themselves in court because, despite the legal aid provided for in Law 58-2017, they do not have access to it. They therefore carry out advocacy work for the application of this law in order to obtain fair and equitable trials.
 

The Association Tunisienne des Femmes Démocrates, founded in 1989, works to promote a culture of gender equality at all social, economic, political, cultural and legal levels. It also promotes women's rights, solidarity with women who are victims of violence and discrimination, and works to strengthen the capacity of women and youth.

ATFD decided to dedicate 2017 as the Year for the Defence of Inheritance Equality. Work in this direction is already under discussion in one of the committees of the Tunisian Parliament. In a context where economic parity in access to inheritance is much more difficult to obtain, the project, "Theatre for Inheritance Equality", aims to stage a play on inheritance equality to be presented at the national theatre on March 8th, with young members of the association as the actors. The play will be filmed so that it can subsequently be shown in other regions of the country, be played on television and serve in debates to sensitize MPs regarding the modernization of laws. The film also will be put onto social networks to reach a larger audience.
